Wormwood - Ghostlands-Wounds From A Bleeding Earth (2017) - Review

Band: Wormwood
Album title: Ghostlands - Wounds From A Bleeding Earth
Release date: 9 March 2017
Label: Non Serviam Records

Tracklist:
01. Gjallarhornet
02. The Universe Is Dying
03. Under Hennes Vingslag
04. Godless Serenade
05. Oceans
06. Silverdimmans Återsken
07. Tidh ok Ödhe
08. Beneath Ravens And Bones
09. The Windmill
10. What We Lost In The Mist
11. The Boneless One
12. To Worship

Wormwood spawned early in 2014, already then with a sheer goal and strong vision of their future. The band was founded by guitarist Rydsheim and bass player Borka (both ex-Åskfödd), the two joined forces with the drummer Johtun. After establishing down the main ideas for the band they recruited singer Nine who had the ferociousness they were looking for. Guitarist Nox later on completed the line-up of Wowmwood. Together they were hiding in the underground and slowly crafting the sound that they were going to represent as Wormwood in the coming future. Wormwood's music is a mix of atmospheric and grim black metal with hints of ancient Scandinavian melodies. They released their first EP named The Void - Stories From The Whispering Well, followed by short tour and strong support of their EP. Soon after that they started working on material for what would be the bands debut album making its way into 2017, and so in early 2016 Ghostlands - Wounds From A Bleeding Earth was ready, mixed and mastered by Sverker Widegren of Diabolical fame.

The album is inspired by the Scandinavian north, the vast and mystical space and old folklore, and this led to the unique sound of WormwoodGhostlands - Wounds From A Bleeding Earth is as "grimm" as its beautiful, a truly majestic album that clearly shows that Sweden is the land of many beautiful things, just to name few... ZornheymHyperion among many other great names and now Wormwood are to be added to the list of Swedish new gods.

Many might describe Wormwood's music as folk/black metal, despite very melodic it has that raw edge and brutallity you need from black metal, but enough melodies to ensure you won't get bored. Most of the songs doesn't follow a special pattern and makes it less of a repetitive album, something that is quite common in black metal, as it can be easy to get lost in a wall of blast beats, but Wormwood shows no tendences to follow the stereotype, with clear vision and goals in sight, they make use of all kinds of various instruments and really brings out that nice mixture of folk black metal you've only heard before in Finland. Raise your glass for Wormwood because the overall soundscape of the album is very pleasent, almost a bit ambiental at certain parts.

The guitar work is perfectly blended with nice orchestration in the background and it simply lifts the whole album to a new level. While many bands tend to live on the keys, Wormwood utilizes them in a very good way and still manages to deliver in front those sharp black metal riffs we all love. Despite Wormwood being fairly new to the eyes of the world the members sure are no strangers to composing great music, its hard to put to words exactly what one feels, but it's just one of those records that pretty much speaks for itself and everyone should be able to get their own opinion from this melodic epic album. Despite being almost flawless one cannot help but not missing the faster stuff, we are surely never left without a single moment of thinking why this or that was done, each track is perfectly executed as the tracks move on half way through the album you will feel as if you are entering another world. Wormwood's Ghostlands - Wounds From A Bleeding Earth should do the same as Hyperion's debut did for them! In terms of quality and song writing the album is very well done, also the production is good. It's another gem to the collection of yours, so get your copy now, it's a must have for any fan of melodic/folk/black metal!

Shining Interview 2015 NIklas kvarforth (repost)

Interview with Niklas Kvarforth 2015 repost

Your new album IX / Everyone everything everywhere Ends is soon to be out! How did you come to that name ?The title has followed me since 2006 but didn’t feel compatible with how things were going back then. The title itself should be self-explanatory. And maybe give a hint where things are heading with this band, who knows? I like the idea of a title that can mean several things, depending on who reads it.

How was the recording process working with Andy La Rocque ?Extremely easy-going compared to last time. When we recorded “Redefining Darkness” we spent eleven weeks in the studio, whilst this time around three weeks was enough. Andy is not only a fan of what we are doing but he also understands and knows how to work with the kind of schizoid material he’s being given. Also, it’s very good that he, unlike most others we have worked with throughout the years, has an opinion about things and therefore pushes you extra hard to give it your best in times of uncertainty and delusion.

Most of your lyrics are written in your native tounge ! Do you find it easier to express yourself in that way or has it just become a natrual thing ?It depends from time to time really. Lyrics are very important to me as an artist but unfortunately, because of this godforsaken internet-age, there have circulated several incorrect translations made by so called “fans” of ours, which ultimately resulted in me having to publish a book a few years back with my own, correct ones. The second edition is actually almost sold out now but I’ll publish a third one in a near future which also will include the new lyrics. To sum up, yes, it is easier to write in my native tongue but as said, it’s nothing I am in control of. What’s being put on paper is what is being put on paper, regardless of language.

Over the past years many people have come and gone in Shining , would you say that the musicans are tools that you use to express your work that is Shining , since Shining is Kvarforth? As I clearly defined my fellow musicians as a “toolbox” since the very early days, yes, that was the case, and several of these people had to be replaced repeatedly. Just as with a real toolbox, the instruments lose their effectiveness and you throw them away, getting new ones. However, the current line-up has remained pretty much the same for the last three years so nowadays I would actually consider Shining as having grown into a real band, whatever that means.

Your new album cover is quite different who was artist behind it ?Yes, the cover is distinctly different from any past album of ours, which is more of a coincidence than a choice really. As with everything else I do with the band, I just go where my gut takes me, and this time around there were no existing ideas that I found suitable for where this album was heading so I therefore contacted one of my favourite contemporary painters, Daniele Serra, asking to use an older canvas of his for the cover. Unfortunately at the time, that very painting was unavailable so he then offered to make something from scratch based on the themes of the album. I think it turned out perfect. However, there are people who seem to disagree, saying it does not look like a Shining cover, but who the hell are they to tell me what a Shining cover looks like?

Could you walk us through your live / studio gear like do you have any special gear that you just can't live without in the studio? No.

There are a lot of blues influences in your music where did they come from?
I’ve always been a huge fan of blues so of course the genre itself has had an influence on my own writing, as have other types of music not related to what we are doing.

You mentioned in many interviews you'd like to do a tour with Opeth, Alice cooper, King Dimond is that something we might expect for the future ?Too early to tell, but yeah, I would rather tour with bands like that so that we can expose ourselves to a new kind of audience. Don’t get me wrong, we’re perfectly fine with what we currently have but the need for expansion is always there and I believe that in order to reach a certain audience, the Opeth one for instance, we would have to tour with them as most of their fan-base wouldn’t even consider having a listen to what we do because of all rumours, things that have happened in the past and so on. And most fans of these other bands probably believe we sound like Darkthrone or something you know.

Many people praise the album Halmstad as your best work! Have you ever considerd doing a full tour playing that album from start to end! ?Actually yes, we’re considering doing a “Halmstad” tour on the 10th anniversary of the album release. I understand why people consider this a milestone of our discography, and I do too, and it would be fantastic to bring the whole thing on stage with acoustic instruments and strings included.

Is there any chance of seeing any covers from Alice cooper or mabye Guns n roses? We already recorded a Alice Cooper cover which was used as B-side for the first single we released with the seventh album. We have also discussed doing a cover of “November Rain” or “My Michelle”, but as things look now we won’t record any covers whatsoever in the nearest future.

How does the writing process work for you ? Are you the person who can just grab a guitar and start pumping out tunes ? Or do you build all music inside your head first ?I mostly complete a full album in my head before even touching a guitar. This time around though, things worked a bit differently as it was Euge, and not me, who kick-started the writing process by contributing his own ideas.

Can you name some movies that really inspierd you ?I watch a lot of movies and must say I have been inspired by countless ones throughout the years. But I guess the one that have made the biggest impression is “Blue Velvet” by David Lynch. There is a certain darkness hidden within that film which no one else has ever come close to conjuring.

Both jazz and blues seem to be some major influences in your music is that something you plan to continue with ?As said, I am not really in control of what direction my music is taking when I write it. I just follow my heart and never think twice about where the darkness leads me. So, if there is a jazz thing here, or a blues thing there that has manifested during the process it’s meant to be there regardless of whether people find it “suitable” or not.

Shining is no longer just swedish members but also have gotten some Finnish blood in
Could you tell us how you meet each member ?No.

Looking back at the early records the sound it has changed quite a lot
since Within deep dark chambers to Redefining darkness ,
would you say that the change was a natural progression as a musician or was it intentional?Definitely. As I said, I just follow my heart and considering I was twelve years old when I started this band and now am in my early thirties it’s not that odd that my writing has progressed quite dramatically from “Within Deep Dark Chambers”. I mean, the sinister and melancholic aura of Shining has always, at least in my ears, remained the same. And that’s really all Shining needs to be.

How long was the writing process for the new record ?Two weeks.

what were your musical influences when growing up ?Guns N’Roses, John Carpenter and Burzum.

At what age did you pick up the guitar also did you take any basic lessons? Or self tought ?I am self-taught, although I did participate in a “how-to-group” for about 2 lessons. I think that was when I was eight or nine if I’m not mistaken.

What are your thoughts on socialmedia is it a good tool for bands to utilise in order to spread your music! It’s definitely a good tool in terms of promotion but nothing I want to partake in. When we travel for example, all the others talk through Facebook and stuff like that, and get this endless stream of meaningless information that I want absolutely nothing to do with. Personally, I think it has somewhat destroyed the basic foundation of anticipation and mystery but yes, it is definitely a good tool to use when promoting something.

From what ive read all members contributed to the new album ?No. Euge and I wrote the album. Huss arranged the intro. But yeah, when you’re in the studio everyone more or less contributes by adding their “colour-scheme” to the result.

Whats the best and worst experience that you've had while being on tour? You have to wait for the documentary to find out about things like that. There are just too many fucking bad things that have happened for me to mention in a brief interview you know. There are hundreds of rumours out there that I am aware of but most don’t know the worst and that’s why Martin Strandberg has decided to make this film, or at least one of the main reasons.

Since half of the new line up are Finnish , how are you able to practice together ? And how often ?We have never practised together. They show up, we perform.

Do you have any festivals planned for this summer?Yes. We’ll play a couple of festivals during the summer. Though, momentarily I cannot recall the names but be sure to check out our website frequently for updates on things like that.

Do you have any last words before we wrap this interview up ?Thank you for the support! Hope you’ll “enjoy” the new album and make sure to attend any future ceremony held in your area, or travel to wherever we might appear.

BLACK Metal band NORDJEVEL ANNOUNCE EP, EXPAND LINEUP AND SIGN WITH THE FLAMING ARTS AGENCY

NORDJEVEL came into our attention late 2015 with their self titled album Nordjevel
a strong organic black metal piece
the album was received very well amongst the world and media,
now they are back with a new ep Krigsmakt
With artwork by Khaos Diktator Design, the three-track EP will be limited to 500 copies, the B side of which is silk screen printed and comes with a printed inner sleeve . Tracklisting on "Krigsmakt" is as follows:

1. Krigsmakt
2. For De Falne...
3. Into Ever Deeper Depths

The ep is set for vinyl release on Osmose productions in 2017
"Krigsmakt" is now available to pre-order from http://www.osmoseproductions.com/item/2/94903-110402-1201-1-0/118522577/nordjevel-krigsmakt.html

(Background)
NORDJEVEL was founded by frontman Doedsadmiral (SVARTELDER, DOEDSVANGR, ENEPSIGOS) and guitarist Nord (FATAL IMPACT, TVANGESTE, BYRDI), and, making use of Doedsadmiral's considerable skills at bringing together musicians who are not only hugely experienced, but who also share the same musical ideas and ideals, the band's ranks were quickly swelled by MARDUK's Fredrik Widigs on drums, and former RAGNAROK bassist DzeptiCunt.  With NORDJEVEL's distinctive sound firmly set, the the band have added another guitarist to their lineup in the shape of Morten "Noralf" Kleftaas, who had previously appeared with the band as a session live guitarist.

The Band comments

- "We have to admit that the success of the debut album caught us a little by surprise.  We knew we had something special, but the response from the fans and critics was overwhelming, and resulted in a lot of interest in us playing live.  We had to totally rethink everything very quickly, and came up with what we consider to be a perfect solution - and that was teaming up with Flaming Arts.

Patricia Thomas, who has been Doedsadmiral's personal manager for longer than either of them care to remember, and who works with all his projects, will continue handling all of NORDJEVEL's PR. She and Flaming Arts have frequently worked together over the years and know how each other functions, which is a big plus for everyone concerned as there is no learning process.  So now we have a great band and a great team, and we can look forward to the future, which will include more live appearances world-wide".

Aside from preparing for their already confirmed live appearances, which include a UK tour in April, a US tour in May, which will culminate in an appearance at the Maryland Deathfest, and an appearance at the Gothoom Open Air Festival in Slovakia in July, NORDJEVEL are currently working on their second full-length album.

NORWAY'S SLAGMAUR STREAM TRACKS FROM UPCOMING ALBUM

NORWAY'S SLAGMAUR STREAM TRACKS FROM UPCOMING ALBUM
We are proud to present the new track from Slagmaur Their new full length album Thill Smitts Terror out shortly on Osmose Productions
the band has agreed to share  a few tracks ahead before hitting the stages at Inferno Festival norway for the second time,
SLAGMAUR was formed in the remote reaches of North Western Norway, in 2006.  The band have never revealed their true identities and always appear heavily disguised, often as characters from their own songs.  Nor have they ever revealed how they create the sinister music that invades the listeners mind with layer upon layer of sound  that reveals a different facet each time you hear it, depending on your current state of mind.   we at nordic metal is proud to be one of the chosen parties to stream this hellish tracks!

'
“Thill Smitts Terror” , the new full-length album from Norway's SLAGMAUR,  is expected to hit the streets very shortly on Osmose Productions.

The nature of SLAGMAUR's artwork, was carefully created  by the band's founder General Gribbsphiiser, and is currently being finalised, and given his exacting demands.  So far no date has been announced as for release date but we hope to shortly be able to present that!
meantime, the band have agreed to share three tracks from the album ahead of their shows  in April and their first ever appearance in the USA in February at the Stardust VI Festival in Brookyln.

“Thill Smitts Terror”  continues where “Von Rov Shelter”, the band's previous outcast 2009 album,  left off, delving more and more deeply into the  disturbing world that SLAGMAUR conjures up by combining modern and classical instruments  with children’s nursery rhymes and fairy tales.  It is a world where classically constructed melodies blend seamlessly with aggressive black metal to create a nightmare scenario straight from the pit of hell.   Art, as well as music, is an integral part of the whole that is SLAGMAUR  - from the sinister masks and costumes the band wears on stage, to the disturbing images used in the artwork for the albums.

More information about SLAGMAUR can be found on the band's Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/slagmaurofficial/  and on Bandcamp at https://osmoseproductions.bandcamp.com/album/von-rov-shelter

Norwegian Black Metallers Crest Of Darkness Reveal New Video And Explain The Concept Behind The Black Bride

Winter is here strong and steady and for norwegian black metal band Crest of Darkness its indeed a great time to reveal for the world whats happening inside the band. Today the band has issued a statement and unleashed their new video from their latest album Welcome the Dead  that saw the light of day December 2nd through My Kingdom Music, now the band reveals a more in depth story of the whole concept for the album. the video being none other then the instrumental track My Black Bride
the track itself is a beautiful instrumental epic piece that really gives you something fresh from their side, deeply and atmospheric very far from  the band's usual Black/Death/Metal sound.  but still not that strange...

according to the bands frontman according the song was written as a tribute to his wife,
Amlien comments  "I had wanted to write a special song for Laila for a long time.  She has supported me and my work for so many years, and without her I really don't know where I would be today, and I  knew right from the start that if I was to create this piece it would have to be totally honest.  Something personal, and not the kind of rose-tinted love song that people tend to expect when you write a song dedicated to the love of your life.

"I tried to capture the feeling of romance and happiness, but at the same time I wanted to touch on something more "forbidden" - the dark side if you like to think of it like that.  Like most couples we have been through many experiences in the time we've shared together, both good and bad. But, unlike most couples, my work has always involved being "in touch" with both Life and Death, something  Laila has always been very aware of, so the difficult times take on a darker significance.

"I also knew that this song had to be an instrumental because words could not possibly express what I was trying to communicate with this song.  I played the guitars myself - I felt I had to as these few notes I'm playing are so extremely personal.   To the listener the song may sound like a simple, stripped down piece of music, which is what I intended it to be, but it comes from the depth of my heart ands contains many small details that someone outside of the relationship I have with my wife cannot understand.  It's a heartbreaking piece, but as with all my music, there is something deeper behind it.  There is my belief that inside all of us there burns a black flame - that special will to survive".

The video itself was created and edited by Francesco Palumbo at MKM Graphix, using images from the Cappuccin Catacombs in Palermo, Italy, and, given that "My Black Bride" is essentially a romantic piece, the choice of such macabre images might seem strange.  "When I first saw the video I almost choked" admitted Amlien.  "The images were right for CREST OF DARKNESS, but I was a little taken aback at first.  However, the more I looked at it, the more I realised that they were, in fact, perfect".

Welcome the Dead" was released on My Kingdom Music in both CD and Digital formats at the end of last year.  A double LP format, which is to be out shortly and its features a special bonus track, that will be released shortly in a collaboration with Metal Age Productions, Kristallblut Records and Supreme Music Creations.  Artwork for the album features  the strange and disturbing Zombie Foetus sculptures created by the Italian artist Andrea Falaschi.

Video shown below!

CREST OF DARKNESS' lineup of
Amlien on bass and vocals,
Rebo on guitars,
Bernhard (ex- PALE FOREST) on drums, and
Kristian Wentzel on keyboards,

The band will celebrate the release of "Welcome the Dead" with a special Friday the 13th show at Retro in Raufoss, Norway in January
